A self-determined individual:

  1. Believes she is in control of her own life.
  2. Takes responsibility for her own behaviour.
  3. Is self-motivated rather than driven by others.
  4. Acts according to internal values and goals.

Examples

Example 1: Student and Failure

  1. A high self-determined student accepts responsibility for failing and plans to study better.
  2. A low self-determined student blames teachers, parents, or friends.

Example 2: Motivation Source

  1. A person starting a hobby because they enjoy it shows self-determination.
  2. Starting a hobby for prestige or approval does not.

Example 3: Relationships

  1. Taking responsibility for past relationship issues shows self-determination.
  2. Blaming all partners does not.
